DOZENS of motorists have crashed on the roads of York and North Yorkshire today, as the region has again faced icy and snowy conditions.

By 2.45pm today, North Yorkshire Police had been called to 34 accidents, including eight in York.

Nobody has been seriously injured and 33 of the accidents were classed as minor, said a spokesman. The only one counted as major was in West Tanfield near Ripon, where a car overturned.

Heavy overnight snowfall has made conditions particularly difficult on the North York Moors.

  • At Nunnington, two cars collided and hit a bridge over the River Riccall at about 9am. A Mitsubishi Outlander and Ford Ka were involved. Nobody was injured.
  • At Thirsk, a car skidded on ice and rolled on to its side.
  • Three vehicles collided in Manor Road in Kirkbymoorside. Nobody was injured.
  • A car careered into a hedge in Lilling near Sheriff Hutton.
  • There have also been relatively minor accidents in West Tanfield, Monk Fryston and Bedale.

Police this afternoon issued this warning on twitter to motorists near Whitby:
