MORE than 100 guns and 600 rounds of ammunition were handed in to North Yorkshire Police during a firearms amnesty.
The amnesty was part of a national initiative to take guns out of circulation and remind people of new legislation which also now applies to antique firearms.
A force spokeswoman said 137 guns were handed over, including 52 shotguns, 33 air weapons, seven rifles and a gun disguised as a walking cane. Police were also handed 628 rounds of ammunition and 417 shotgun cartridges.
She said that under previous legislation, people given a custodial prison sentenced of three months or more were prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition but this prohibition had now been extended to people given suspended prison sentences of three months or more.
