ORGANISERS of the annual Poppy Appeal are calling on local people to support their efforts and help beat last year's total of almost £17,000.

The Malton, Norton and District branch of the Royal British Legion launched the Poppy Appeal 2014 last week.

"Previous support of the Poppy Appeal has been outstanding and the generous donations greatly assist those veterans, their families and dependents who have suffered injury or have fallen on hard times, " said Shaun Brosnan, branch secretary and Poppy Appeal organiser.

"Residents of Malton, Norton and district have always risen to the challenge to raise as much as possible."

Shaun said that there were many young servicemen and women from the district currently serving in the armed services.

"They need to know that there is help and support available to them.

The Royal British Legion provides that support alongside other military charities, " he said.

"It will be a great challenge in the present economic climate. However, with local people's generosity, determination and resolve, we will meet that challenge as our servicemen and women continue to do."

This year's Celebration Concert and Service of Remembrance, in aid of the British Legion Poppy Appeal, will be held at Norton College, on Friday, November 7. The concert will feature songs and music from The Malton White Star Band, St Peter’s Church Worship Group Singers and the Band of the Boys and Girls Brigade (York).

On Remembrance Sunday, November 9, a memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony will take place at Malton War Memorial at 11am, followed by a parade through the town and refreshments at Suddaby's Hotel.

Other services of remembrance and parades will be held across Ryedale.

On Remembrance Day, Tuesday, November 11, at 11am, the Last Post will be sounded outside the former town hall in Malton.

Shaun said organisers would also be grateful for the help of more volunteers.

"The Poppy Appeal would not be such a success without those willing to help, who willingly give their time and energy and we thank all those who have given their support in the past and have pledged their support for this year's appeal, " he said.

"However, we need more volunteers to ensure we make the most of our very limited collecting period, selling poppies, distributing boxes or manning stalls at local outlets."

To help, phone Shaun Brosnan on 07855 796354, daytime, or 01653 693970, evenings, or call into the Poppy Appeal headquarters at the New Globe in Malton.
