EASINGWOLD’S Maize Maze is celebrating ten years of confusing and puzzing visitors.

And this year the attraction has got bigger and better.

There are almost 300,000 maize plants covering some six acres near to Easingwold bypass.

Farmer and owner Paul Caygill sows seeds all over the site and when the area is covered in a mass of maize, about six inches in height, he moves in with a rotovator on the back of a tractor.

Paul said: “I don’t have a pattern, it’s just random. I make a path to the tower in the middle first and then work things out from there. I tend to do just little bits at a time.

“This year we will be putting six clues at various points in the maze and they will all be marking the tenth anniversary.” The maze, which opens on Saturday, is already above six feet in places thanks to almost “perfect” growing conditions. Over the past decade, the maze has grabbed national headlines.

Ginger the Kune Kune pig accidentally swallowed a visitor’s diamond ring which was never recovered.

And a number of resident pygmy goats were stolen, but luckily they were recovered in Teesside and featured in the BBC programme Robbed, Raided and Reunited. As well as the maze, there are also giant inflatable slides and a bouncy castle, go-karts, sandpits, outdoor games and a petting zoo featuring rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, sheep, pigs and ducklings. There will also be magic shows on Mondays.

To mark the maze’s tenth birthday, the attraction is offering £10 off a family season ticket if booked by Friday.
