TWO talented musicians have returned to help teach a group where they learned to play the violin.

Grace Smith and Dan Foster used to be part of the York Young Fiddlers group at York Steiner School and they are now returning to teach the next generation of young fiddle players.

On Saturday, January 31, the pair will be running a workshop for members, providing a chance to learn folk music the traditional way – by ear.

Since finding a passion for traditional fiddle playing in his late teens through programmes such as the York Young Fiddlers and Folkworks Youth Summer Schools, Dan honed his musical skills by attending Irish music sessions in Manchester where he was studying law.

He decided to drop his law studies in favour of a BMus Folk & Traditional Music degree at Newcastle University in 2010.

Since graduating in 2014, Dan has decided to emigrate this year to New England, where he wants to teach music. Grace is studying the same folk music degree in Newcastle.
