A CHARITY concert is being staged in Ripon to raise money for children in Gaza.

Ripon Cathedral will open its doors on October 18 for a special charity performance of Handel's Messiah from 7pm.

The concert is being organised to raise funds for Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) projects for malnourished children in Gaza.

This event follows the charity tradition which Handel began with his early performances of Messiah in the 1750s which helped to fund the work of the Foundling Hospital in London.

The Ripon Messiah will have the support of four highly acclaimed soloists whose musical careers include work with the Yorkshire Bach Choir, together with the orchestra of 21 musicians and chorus of 200 singers will be conducted by Alistair Hardie.

Organiser Sue Cooke said: “It is important to remember, and help the children in Gaza where a shocking level of food insecurity has led to widespread stunting and chronic malnutrition.

"Our special performance of Messiah is a great opportunity to support the work of MAP in a very positive and up-lifting way."

The £14 tickets are available in advance from Ripon Cathedral Shop, visitors centres in York and Harrogate.
