HARROGATE Borough Council’s new leader and cabinet has been announced.

The Conservative party strengthened its grip on the authority at elections last month, but now a reshuffle has seen Harrogate Central’s Richard Cooper replace Andrew Alton as leader.

The new deputy leader has been named as Killinghall councillor Michael Harrison, who will also be cabinet member for planning and economic development.

The other cabinet roles have gone to Phil Ireland - Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and External Affairs; Mike Chambers - Cabinet Member for Housing; Margaret Atkinson - Cabinet Member for Safer Communities; and Pat Jones - Cabinet Member for Cultural Services.

Cllr Cooper said he believed the authority faced a challenging time with a consultation on its future office accommodation strategy, and a new Local Plan.
