THE achievements of youngsters at York’s specialist arts college have been celebrated at the annual awards evening.

Pupils at Canon Lee School were honoured for their hard work in a range of subjects and extra-curricular activities at an evening at York Theatre Royal.

Entertainment included various songs, readings and performances from the children as well as the Canon Lee Big Band.

The evening was compered by head teacher Kevin Deadman, pictured.

He said: “This really is a wonderful evening when we can all be truly proud of the achievements of our young people as they come on stage; proud parents, grandparents, teachers, fellow students and, I can tell you, proud head teacher.”

Canon Lee became a specialist arts college in 2005, and since then there has been an enormous development in the range of activities, facilities and resources available to students.

Mr Deadman said a recent Ofsted inspection had graded the school as “good”.

He said inspectors had found that students like the school, it offers a good curriculum, it has good leadership, the teaching and learning are good, pupils feel safe and that lessons are well planned.

He said: “As you will appreciate, none of this would be possible without the commitment and dedication of excellent staff, effective ad supportive governors, a top quality local authority and parents who really care.

“Together we are now building on our success aiming ever higher to achieve still greater success.”
