THE country’s first children’s commissioner, Sir Al Aynsley-Green, is being awarded with an honorary degree from the University of York.

Sir Al will receive one of seven honorary degrees being awarded by the university this year and will join hundreds of students who are being awarded degrees at the university’s Central Hall over three days, yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Other honorary degrees go to the journalist who was the BBC’s “voice” of India for two decades, Sir Mark Tully, and Lord Stern of Brentford, former chief economist and senior vice-president of the World Bankt, who conducted an influential Government review of the costs of climate change.

The university confers honorary degrees each year on those who have made a significant contribution to society.
Honorary graduates are selected from nominations by members of the university and often have links with departments or are alumni.

Sir Al Aynsley-Green acts as an independent voice for children and young people, championing their interests and bringing their views and concerns to the national arena.

He was previously the first national clinical director for children and chairman of the Children’s Taskforce at the Department of Health.

Sir Al is also a proud grandfather with six young grandchildren.

He will be presented with his honorary degree by Professor Gillian Parker, of the Social Policy Research Unit, in a ceremony tomorrow morning.

The other six honorary doctorates this year are being awarded to: Dr Marye Anne Fox, Chancellor of the University of California; Sir David Harrison, director of the Salters’ Institute of Industrial Chemistry; composer and practitioner of choral music, Dr Richard Shephard; and Dr Saleem Badat, the first chief executive officer of the Council on Higher Education.
