STUDENTS, parents and staff at Tadcaster Grammar School remembered caving accident victim Joe Lister two years on.

The school's annual speech day gave youngsters the chance to reflect on their achievements as the inquest into Joe's death continues.

Joe, who was 14, died on November 14, 2005, while on a school trip with ten other pupils, in Upper Nidderdale.

He was caving in an area known as Manchester Hole, when it is understood he became trapped by rising waters.

The school presented the Joe Lister Sporting Achievement trophy in memory of the youngster, who was a keen sportsman.

The trophy was awarded to the pupil whose sporting achievement has required most determination, hard work, perseverance, endeavour and commitment.

This year was the second time the trophy had been presented and it went to pupil Charlotte Austwick.

Head teacher Geoff Mitchell praised the achievements of students at the school in the past academic year.

He said: "The GCSE results were two per cent above our target with 77 per cent of students achieving five A* - C grade, 67 per cent achieved that when English and maths were included - double the national average.

"This has enabled Tadcaster Grammar to maintain its position in the top five of North Yorkshire schools."

The inquest into Joe's inquest is still on-going and resumes in Harrogate today.
