CAMPAIGNERS to reopen a Yorkshire railway line have welcomed a call for better rail links in the north.

The Minsters Rail Campaign wants to reopen the Beverley to York line.

Peter Hemmerman, chairman, said: “It’s simple mathematics, you cannot increase road size and expect all the traffic to feed into the same small town or city with all its inherent parking and access problems.

"The only sustainable and future-proof mass transit system is a modern viable railway properly integrated with village bus services and adequate rural station services to feed people in and out of their places of work, leisure and other needs.

“We are working with all the local councils along the route to bring them on board. The reopening of the direct Hull-Beverley-York ‘Minsters’ rail line as a modern railway fit for the 21st century will be key to the social and economic future of the East Riding. It will greatly improve travel opportunities and will enhance sustainable development. Without it there will be a direct long-term loss to the local economy.”
