FLASH-FLOODING caused chaos in Market Weighton after torrential rain fell in the East Yorkshire town.

Humberside Fire & Rescue Service were called to numerous flooded shops and houses between 7.30pm and 9.30pm on Sunday evening after a thunderstorm swept the town.

Angry traders claimed that a £3 million flood defence project which was intended to protect them from inundation had done nothing to protect their livelihoods.

Firefighters went out to deal with flooded properties and streets in Shipman Road, Clay Lane, Croft Close, Londesborough Road, Wicstun Way, Meadow Drive, Hawling Road, Eastfield Road, Bedale Court, Wold Avenue, Scotts Croft, Southgate, Shipman Road, Cliffe Road, Croft View, Princess Road, Langdale Road and High Street.

In some cases, floodwater was pumped from properties and streets into becks and culverts, while in other instances firefighters simply gave advice to residents as flooding receded.
