COUNCIL chiefs in East Yorkshire are on track to hit their budget despite needing to save more than £24 million this year.

A report by finance officials which will be discussed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s cabinet next week has analysed the authority’s performance during the first four months of the financial year and says £23.6 million of the savings earmarked earlier this year are expected to be made by the end of next March.

It said the £603,000 in savings which may not be met would be covered by underspends in other areas of the council’s budget. The authority currently expects to exceed its children’s social care budget target by £487,000, mainly because the number of children in its care is higher than anticipated, while its school improvement service may overspend by £525,000.

However, the report by director of corporate resources Malcolm Sims said the council was currently expecting to beat its budget in the areas of adult services, public health, the early years service and “streetscene” services, such as waste disposal.
