THE details that have now emerged about York's proposed new community stadium suddenly start to make it all seem much more real.

In addition to the 8,000-seat stadium itself, we now know the development will include a three-storey leisure centre; three pools; a 12 screen cinema; two restaurants; six shops; a 'community hub' with space to be used by York Hospital and the city library; and an outdoor area with three synthetic five-a-side football pitches.

The full 'community' aspect of this long-awaited project has suddenly become much more apparent. And after all the history of delays and argument, there is now a palpable sense of excitement.

As you'd expect with any major project such as this, there are those who object: among them Vue cinema at Clifton Moor. Huntington Parish Council has also raised legitimate concerns about traffic, although it has not objected outright.

Most of the objections raised to the scheme actually relate to concerns about the York City Knights not being part of the stadium. It is essential that they are brought on board. But there are far more people in favour of the scheme than against it: including 500 people who have signed a petition.

The project will be referred to communities secretary Eric Pickles. But provided he doesn't want to 'call it in' for further examination, council officers are expected to approve the plans.

We hope that all happens quickly, so that work can finally begin on this exciting and much-needed project.
