CERTAIN events in history throw a very long shadow – few more so than the massacre of York’s Jewish population at Clifford’s Tower. Some 150 Jews died that day in March 1190.

Eight hundred years later, Jews in York have still “traditionally kept their heads down” because of this dark chapter in history, says Ben Rich of the York Liberal Jewish Community. Not any longer. Ben’s community has been holding regular monthly services at the Quaker Meeting House in Friargate.

On February 27, they will hold an open interfaith service designed to bring people of all faiths in York – Anglican, Baha’i, Catholic, Methodist, Muslim, Quaker and Jewish – together.

At a time when religious tensions and racial intolerance seem to be on the rise, it is wonderful to see an initiative such as this taking place. We wish the service every success – and hope it succeeds in uniting people of all faiths in celebration of the values they share.
