THE man from Del Monte says yes. Not, this time, to a consignment of tropical fruit, but something even more important: new homes.

The company has applied to City of York Council for permission to build 60 houses on the site of its former factory in Skelton and it looks as though the scheme will get the green light, once detailed agreements have been thrashed out.

Which is good news. York has a well-documented and chronic housing crisis, which the city can only build its way out of. Even better, this application concerns a brownfield site, but perhaps best of all there should be provision for affordable housing to help hard-pressed families find somewhere to live.

This is a significant development and another sign of growing confidence in York’s economy. Schemes such as this should tick all the boxes, so we look forward to a satisfactory deal being struck and approval being granted by the council’s planning committee when it meets next week.
