SIR Alan Ayckbourn is often seen as an important commentator on the lifestyles of Britain’s suburban middle class. Now the Champion Of Paribanou playwright is championing those who find it difficult to make ends meet, by asking well off pensioners to donate their winter heating allowance in favour of those in greater need.
The problem with our benefits system is it is necessarily a catch-all, any other way would be too unwieldy. This is why seemingly absurd situations exist such as people earning £100,000 a year being able to claim child allowance.
They can choose not to, but there is no guarantee the money will then find its way to those who really need it. Which is why we think Sir Alan has come up with a very good suggestion.
