NEWGATE market has been prominent in York since the Middle Ages, but some reckon that being tucked away behind Shambles, it’s no longer prominent enough, certainly not for visitors who could easily pass it by.
However, for the past couple of months the market couldn’t have been more conspicuous, having temporarily relocated to its former home on Parliament Street.
Many think the stalls should stay there to add life and colour, yet they don’t offer any protection from the elements and on a snowy winter’s day the market wouldn’t be half as appealing for traders or shoppers alike.
The massive refurbishment of Newgate’s permanent home is nearly complete and although some will be sad to see the stalls move back, what really matters is that we still have a market.
