DICK Turpin came to an ignominious end. Hanged at Tyburn in 1739, the notorious highwayman was buried in St George’s churchyard.
His body was then dug up by graverobbers, recovered by a mob, paraded around York on a board, then reburied.
He’s thought to have lain in St George’s graveyard more or less quietly ever since. Now, volunteers are to spruce up the graveyard, laying a path and installing an information board.
We’d love to know what Turpin would have made of that.
