There are no survivors of the First World War still living.
But in a new book published next week by the York Oral History Society, the voices of some of York’s Great War veterans can still be heard.
These Were Earth’s Best brings together transcripts of interviews with more than 200 First World War veterans recorded 30 years ago. A CD allows you to listen to some.
It is a beautiful, heartbreaking book. It should be required reading in this anniversary year.
