WHEN we speak of heroes who gave their lives so that others could keep theirs, we are usually referring to wartime soldiers. But Dan Webster’s great grandfather, Frank Dalton, was not a military man, he was a member of the Scarborough lifeboat crew who, in raging seas in 1951, helped to save all ten people on board the Dutch cargo ship Westkust.

But in doing so Mr Dalton made the ultimate sacrifice.

Three years ago Dan vowed to keep his great-grandfather’s act of selflessness uppermost in people’s memories by taking part in the Great North Run. But that wasn’t enough. Dan is going to run in the event ten times - one for every life his great-grandfather saved - and September will see race number three.

It is often said that actions speak louder than words. Dan Webster is a fine example of why they do.
