IT WAS a cookery demonstration by popular demand.

Iqbal Chowdhury, proprietor of the Bengal Brasserie in Goodramgate, York, had so many people asking him about recipes for his Bangladeshi-style food that he finally relented.

Patrons not only heard about the secret spices that went into his starter and main course dishes from his award-winning international chefs Mohon Miah, and Koyes Miah and Jalal Miah (all unrelated), but also from Iqbal’s wife, Mumina.

She showed how to stir-fry vegetables in the Bangladeshi way as a quick snack while the chefs demonstrated how to fry popadoms and prepare onion bhajis and aubergine pakora.

Then Mohon demonstrated why he was the Asian Chef Of The Year in 2005 by preparing a simple chicken curry with mixed spices.

Iqbal said: “My patrons quickly understood the value of people like Mohon and his team, including the waiters who afterwards served the gathering of 51 people with an array of dishes, all of which they applauded.”

Looking on throughout the demonstration was Iqbal’s daughter, Farhihah, 14, his son Abid, 11 and his partner Abidul Khan.

“Because it was so successful we plan another cookery demonstration at the Bengal Brasserie in Goodramgate on Sunday October 17,” said Iqbal.
