Students noise pledge if accommodation plans get go-ahead

STUDENTS have offered to play a part in keeping noise and litter levels down if plans for new accommodation blocks on the site of a former York garage get the go-ahead.

Black Lion Ltd has applied for permission to build 250 student flats on the Lawrence Street site which once housed the Reg Vardy car dealership and Bubbles car wash, but which has more recently been targeted by vandals and occupied by squatters.

The University of York Students’ Union has written to City of York Council planners supporting the proposals but acknowledging concerns about late-night noise and increased litter if the flats are built. It said it would help implement a “night marshals” scheme to keep noise levels down.

They want to keep the noise down next door to us. Shouting and carrying on til 5/6am. Told them, told owner of the house and also told the estate agent to no avail. They need more respect for their neighbours. Told them every night they just laugh at you.

I accept that the noise patrols do some good- but what about the litter- fag ends outside the YSJ campus, where the Uni proudly says it is a no smoking campus - so they pollute the social housing and litter the streets where the residents live who pay the rates formyour students. Come on students! Take more responsibility and leadership!

I do my best to support and welcome- but I don't see litter patrols, or the SU approaching student houses with trash all over the garden.

There are really only 2 issues, noise and litter/rubbish/recyc
ling. I just dont buy it that more couldn't be done by the Unis leading partnerships to address these quick fix issues.

Is this a sign of the times? When I was a student in the 70's, both in halls and student houses, noise was never an issue. Once it was dark, the student areas in both Manchester and Bradford) were like ghost towns as students generally were busy working or in the Student union building. I rather doubt that today's real students are much different. I know of many non-students in 'student accomodation' - could these be responsible for the noise problem?

Sawday2 - I think you are right - there are noise problems from students but many of them are from people who don't have to get up for work in the morning and don't care that others have to.
