EMERGENCY services were called and an East Yorkshire factory was evacuated after a series of large “explosions” last night.

Police, ambulance and fire-fighters were scrambled following the incident at about 11pm at the Montracon trailer factory in Market Weighton.

Five fire crews spent more than two hours battling a blaze in the vicinity of the site . The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Local resident Tony Barron witnessed the incident, saying: “I was sat watching television when I heard two distinctive and very large explosions.

“I looked out of the lounge window and could see flames leaping high into the night air and thick smoke rising across the other side of the town in the direction of the trailer factory.”

Police evacuated the late shift workers at the factory. It is not thought anyone has been injured in the incident.

Mr Barron told The Press that two fire engines had arrived within minutes.

“It was obvious from the flames that this was a major incident developing,” he said.

“Police and paramedic fast responders arrived on scene soon after.

He said large groups of local residents had started to congregate on Holme Road, but police cordoned off the area shortly afterwards.

“You could see flames rising from the building and a reasonably strong breeze was fanning the fire and causing thick acrid smoke to blow across Holme Road and local houses.”

Residents living near the factory were advised to keep their windows shut following the incident.
