RUGBY union legend Sir Ian McGeechan and the entire Leeds Carnegie first-team squad made a surprise appearance at a summer camp at York RUFC .

Yorkshire-born former British Lions and Scotland coach McGeechan is the National League One side’s new executive chairman.

He brought the squad to Clifton Park for a coaching session at the venue, which will be used for the British & Irish Cup pool five tie with Jersey on Sunday, October 21 (3pm).

After watching the first-teamers in action, the youngsters attending the three-day camp were put through their paces by Carnegie development officer Adam Blades and some of the senior players.

A Leeds spokesman said: “As part of attending the Carnegie camps, the attendees are guaranteed two players to assist with coaching, but the children at York were given a massive treat with the appearance of the whole first-team squad and Sir Ian McGeechan.

“The team put on a real show in an hour-long training session which was watched by the children over their dinner break and then the afternoon was spent with Carnegie first-team players such as Craig Hampson, Jacob Rowan, Ben Hooper, who volunteered to coach the children after their own training session.

“The children were left amazed by the interaction they were able to have with the players and even had time at the end of the day to have a question and answer session with the Carnegie boys and, of course, a few photos and the chance to have their camp T-shirts signed.

“The three days were a big success with a great response from the participants and parents.”
