A MAN from York who was seriously injured in a crash on the A19 earlier this week has died.

The 57-year-old was driving a silver Rover when it was involved in a head-on collision with a black Vauxhall Mervia at about 2pm on Tuesday, about two miles south of Shipton-by-Beningbrough. The stretch of road was closed for about four hours.

Yesterday, a spokesman for North Yorkshire Police announced that the 57-year-old had died from his injuries in hospital on Thursday.

Police said they were unable to reveal the dead man’s identity at this stage.

The accident happened as the cars negotiated a bend in the road. The Rover was going towards York and the Vauxhall towards Easingwold.

The Rover driver was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary. A family of four in the Vauxhall – a man, woman and two children – suffered minor cuts and bruises and were taken by ambulance to York Hospital .

Police officers are still keen to find witnesses to the incident, in particular the driver of a white van which was following the Rover shortly before the accident.

Anyone who can help police with the investigation is asked to phone North Yorkshire Police on 101 – select option two – and ask for Traffic Constable Ian McKenzie.
