A CITY-centre street in York will be closed to traffic again this weekend – only weeks after it reopened following major roadworks.

Skeldergate, which runs parallel to the River Ouse between Micklegate and Skeldergate Bridge, was shut for about eight weeks for gas and electrical work earlier this summer, about a fortnight longer than originally scheduled.

Now a City of York Council temporary traffic restriction order has been imposed, closing the road between Micklegate and Fetter Lane, and there will also be traffic lights controlling single-flow traffic movement between Micklegate and Bridge Street.

The order, allowing for electrical work to take place, continues until next weekend, although officials say it is envisaged the work will be carried out today and tomorrow.

Keith Meadley, of Keith Meadley Photography in Skeldergate, said the earlier scheme had lost him business. He said he had received no prior warning about either that closure or today’s additional work.

A spokesman for Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions said it had been working closely with the council to ensure disruption was kept to a minimum while it carried out essential gas mains replacement and electricity cabling work in Skeldergate.

“Throughout this project, both our electricity cabling teams and our gas mains replacement teams have been co-ordinating their activities as much as possible so road closure can be for the shortest possible time,” he said.

“Now that work has been completed on two lengths of cable along Skeldergate and North Street, we now need to complete the connection across the junction with Micklegate, which will require the closure of Skeldergate for a further short period.”

He said this final work would be carried out over this weekend and next weekend.

“We appreciate that any works on this scale will cause some disturbance and would like to offer our sincere apologies to everyone who has been affected.”
