PLANS have been unveiled for 120 new homes in a North Yorkshire village.

The scheme would see the housing estate being built on farmland on the edge of Sherburn-in-Elmet.

Proposals for the development have been handed in to Selby District Council.

A decision on the plans for a 4.6-hectare site close to Carousel Walk and the Fairfield link road, which have been put forward by MacGay Wayne Ltd, is expected to be made in August.

If approved, the homes would be a mixture of two, three and four-bedroom properties, with most of them being two storeys high, and a central green would also be included along with a new access road to the development.

A public consultation on the proposed scheme was carried out last November and the developers said they would be looking to create “green corridors” through its design.

North Yorkshire Police, one of the public bodies which has been consulted on the proposals, has welcomed the applicants’ confirmation that they will ensure adequate crime-prevention measures are put in place if the project is approved.

The force said in its response to the council that levels of crime and antisocial behaviour in Sherburn-in-Elmet are “particularly high” and this had been raised when other, separate planning applications had been drawn up for the area.

Meanwhile, North Yorkshire County Council has also supported the plans, saying it was satisfied the scheme would not “overburden” local roads.

Sherburn-in-Elmet Parish Council is due to discuss its stance on the new homes at a meeting later this month.
