AN auction will be held at Selby Abbey this month to raise funds for maintenance and repairs.

Items up for grabs include a flight from Breighton Airfield in a small aircraft, a game of golf for four at The Oaks, and a tour of the Abbey’s tower with the opportunity to wind the clock.

Selby Globe Cinema has donated two free tickets for a film, plus a meal at Frankie and Benny’s following the performance, a men’s haircut by Claire at Bodyzone Barbers, and a cut and blow-dry at Halo’s.

The vicar, Canon John Weetman, said he was grateful to everyone who had contributed: “It is a big challenge looking after Selby’s world-renowned abbey so that it can remain open to visitors and continue to serve this local community.

“But it is always encouraging to receive the support of that community in so many ways and not least in those who’ve given generously of their time and talents and gifts towards our auction.

“There’s still plenty of time for more donations of goods and promises and then all we need is a good crowd on the day to come and bid. We can’t promise Bargain Hunt but it should be a great afternoon.”

Other auction prizes include vouchers towards a meal at Capri and Sunshine Thai restaurants, a voucher from Rioco Café, flowers from Lisa’s, goods from Wetherells, and a number of pictures of the Abbey itself.

Viewing of the lots starts at the abbey at 10am on Saturday, August 18, and the auction starts at 2pm.

Anyone who would like to add a donation to be auctioned can contact the abbey office on 01757 703123.
