THIRTEEN motorists are due in court charged with driving at “extreme speeds” of up to 132mph on North Yorkshire’s roads.

Six car drivers and seven motorcyclists will appear at Selby Magistrates Court next Thursday, after being “clocked” by North Yorkshire Police’s speed-camera van.

Their speeds allegedly range from 72mph in a 40mph zone to 132mph in a 70mph zone. Seven of the 13 were caught at speeds of more than 100mph on the A63 at Newthorpe, near Sherburn-in-Elmet police say.

The defendants include a 52-year-old from Sherburn-in-Elmet, allegedly spotted driving at 101mph, and a 45-year-old from Knottingley, allegedly “clocked” at 132mph. Four of the 13 were caught on the A64 at Tadcaster , the worst stretch of road for speeding in the county.

They include a 43-year-old from York driving a Porsche Cayenne allegedly at 97mph in a 70mph zone, a 27-year-old from York said to be driving a Mercedes CLK at 96mph and a 65-year-old from Sherburn-in-Elmet allegedly driving at 97mph in a Toyota Avensis.

The six-month pilot of North Yorkshire’s first speed camera van was launched on July 1 last year in a bid to reduce fatal and serious accidents. The trial was extended in December 2011.

The van is equipped with five cameras on the front, rear and roof.

The technology can detect the speed of approaching and receding traffic from up to 1,000 metres away and captures 360 degree images of the location.
