My husband and I were in York (visiting from the States) on June 28, when he slipped and fell in the market area of Shambles, scraping his arm rather badly. Immediately people rushed to his aid.

There was a young man on his way to work who knew where first-aid boxes were and got us bandages, disinfectant wipes, and tape.

A husband and wife got him a step ladder to sit on, helped clean him up, and escorted us to a café where he got strong, sweet tea for shock.

A man who worked in the market found out how to call the bicycle medic if we felt the need.

And there were others who stopped and asked if we needed more help. We are an older couple, and such a fall could have been quite nasty; however, the prompt help we were provided meant that his arm was cleaned and bandaged so no infection set in.

We do not know who you are, so we must thank you this way.

We will remember York and its citizens for the rest of our lives.
