SIXTH formers gave University York St John the thumbs up in a big way when they applied to start degree courses this autumn.

The university, which set its tuition fee at £500 below the £9,000 maximum, saw a 12 per cent per cent increase in degree course applications for 2012 compared to 2011.

It is the highest increase of any English university except Anglia Ruskin University, according to figures just released by UCAS.

Commenting on the increase in applications, Professor David Fleming, Vice Chancellor of York St John University, said: “We are thrilled to have such an increase in applications, especially when overall university applications are down in England.

“The community on our campus and in the city of York makes this a great place to come and study.

“We’ve invested a lot in the quality of our teaching, the campus environment and opportunities for students to get fully involved in student life.”
