Nick Turnbull and debutant Michael Kwong were top of the Popps in division one of the Tyke Petroleum Tennis League. They scored three points from 24 games for Poppleton firsts as they defeated their own second team, including a narrow 7-5 rubber success over Nick’s dad Paul, and his partner John Anderson. The result keeps Popp 1 top of the league and lifts Popp 2 off the bottom of the division.

It’s Rowntree Park who keep on the pace, with a remarkable 8-4 win at fortress David Lloyd, where it was Park’s James Denmark and Ian MacAuley who went unbeaten, with 2½ points. David Woon and Roger Fawcuss won half their team’s games and three points as division two toppers, Castlegarth edged a close match against chasers Wigginton.

Boston Spa, York 2 and Stamford Bridge all progress with good wins, but it’s York 2 who jump ahead to third after Matthew’s Robinson and Guiver bagged 3-31 in their 9½-2½ defeat of Knaresborough King James, who debuted two players.

Rowntree Park 2 press on at the top of division three, with an 11-point win as Dave Rogers and Ed Martin top-scored with three points and 32 games at home to strugglers Rufforth.

A solid team effort from Boston Spa 2 helped them to 6½ points, despite Jonathan Sharpe and Phil Bremner running rampant for visitors, Sherburn with a three for 26 haul in a 54-54 draw.

Only Alex Herriott and Tom Craddock got on the board for Fulford 2, with two points at home to an efficient Starbeck 2, who closed in on a promotion spot in division four, with a match in hand.

Mike Taylor and Kevin Todd brought home the points for Dunnington 2 at Copmanthorpe 2, with three points and 26 games in a tight 58-50 win.

David Lloyd 2 lead division five by 11 points after a confident 9½-point haul at home to bottom team Castlegarth 2.

Riccall’s Rex Pocklington and partner Dave Pegg, boasting 120 years between them, returned a mighty three points from 30 games.

Bubwith 2 swept Heworth aside 8-4, despite a captain’s show of 3-24 from Heworth’s Loch Trimingham and David Hicks.

Bishopthorpe 2 took advantage of Poppleton 3 having no match to take over at the top of division six, with a home trouncing of Cliffe.

York 4 missed their chance to progress, taking only two pairs to Sheriff Hutton, where they fell 9-3.

Plucky Wilberfoss 2 lost 9-3 at Alne and Tollerton.

Boston Spa 3 are on the trophy trail after a solid 10½-point triumph at Dunnington 3. Spa’s Phil Baker and James Fasey were unbeaten with 2½ from 25 games.

Pocklington 2 took 11½ points against Selby, including three points and 28 games from captain David Maultby and David Gamble.

Starbeck 3 tumbled two places after suffering a 3½-8½ home defeat by Wheldrake thanks to a haul of 2½ for 23 for Colin Brooks and Jason Watson.

Harrogate Academy went nine points clear at the top of division eight after seeing off second-placed Stamford Bridge 3, by a maximum 12-0.

Jarrod Robinson and Robert Bowles returned 3 for 29.

Harrogate Racquets maintained their solid pursuit after registering an 11-point defeat of David Lloyd 3, who slumped to the bottom.
