A SEVEN-WEEK scheme to replace gas mains on a major road in York will begin later this month.

Northern Gas Networks is fitting modern plastic pipes along a 670-metre stretch of Hull Road, between its junctions with Tang Hall Lane and Lamel Street, from Monday, July 23.

Temporary traffic lights will be installed and motorists are being advised to add a few minutes to their journey times.

The project is also expected to lead to road closures in Norman Street and Cycle Street for up to two weeks, with the dates being confirmed nearer the time.

The gas firm has made an arrangement with the Co-op store in Hull Road for residents to use its car park while work is taking place in side streets.

In return, Northern Gas Networks has made a £300 donation to Mencap, which is the Co-op’s national charity for the year.

Northern Gas Networks spokesman Garry Farnhill said: “The gas mains beneath Hull Road have reached the end of their life and we will be replacing them with modern plastic pipes which will serve local homes and businesses for decades to come.”
