A SCHOOLGIRL from York is taking on a major swimming challenge to raise funds for a York youngster with a rare cancer.

May Beth Madill Parker, 13, a Year 8 pupil at Fulford School, was so touched by the plight of six-year-old Jamie Inglis, who suffers from neuroblastoma, that she decided to attempt the ten-kilometre swim.

She will be swimming in aid of the Keep Jamie Smiling campaign, which aims to raise £250,000 to send Jamie to Germany for potentially life-saving treatment.

May Beth will undertake the 400-length swimathon on July 15, in a dedicated lane of the Energise sports centre in Acomb, where she trains with the Ebor Lifesaving Club. It will take at least six hours.

Her mother, Esme, whose youngest daughter attends Jamie’s school in Heslington, said: “May Beth really hopes that publicity for her amazing swim will encourage more people to donate to this vital cause.”

Steven Smith, May Beth’s head teacher at Fulford School, said: “It always amazes me when some adults, and unfortunately politicians, always criticise young people, especially for their perceived lack of community spirit and get up and go.

“Consequently, it is really heartwarming to hear about the exploits of May Beth.

“I wish her every success. Her efforts show real dedication and a wonderful sense of community spirit and compassion.”
