RECENTLY we noticed that the waste bin at the junction to the entrance to Fulford allotments and the pedestrian/cycle lane at the fields near the Millennium Bridge had vanished.

Enquiries were made but even our local councillor, Andy D’Agorne, could not say what had happened. Then I read that a quarter of city bins faced the axe (The Press, June 22). The article said the council had been removing what were deemed unwanted bins and that this was agreed in February by the city council.

I would like to know who decided the bin in question was ‘unwanted’?

Once again the council has gone about things in its dictatorial manner without thinking of the consequences.

I later discovered that the councillors were not given the opportunity to debate this and they were told by email on June 6 that 350 waste bins/dog waste bins were to be removed as a cost-cutting exercise.

This is a disgrace as the local councillors could have said whether the bins in their area were needed.

This is to save money but the Lord Mayor is to have a new £60,000 limo. Retaining the bins instead would help allow us keep free of litter.

Mr G Alderson, Maple Grove, York.

• JUST for the record, we are horrified that 350 bins and dog bins are being removed without any discussion with councillors or consultation with residents. Councillors had notice that this was happening in an email of June 12. The decision was apparently one of Labour’s budget cuts – a shameful further denigration of our city which can only lead to more litter and mess.

Dave Taylor, Green Party councillor for Fishergate, New Walk Terrace, York.

• LAST week two bins went missing from our village. It was assumed that they had been stolen.

Residents were stunned to discover that the bins had in fact been taken away by the council. This appears to have been done without any consultation with the parish council.

If they had they may have avoided the bizarre decision to remove the bin from the bus shelter, which has resulted in litter strewn on the ground.

I can only imagine that the council has behaved in such an underhand manner to avoid any protest from residents. If the council is really serious about saving money how can it justify wasting money on a recent survey concerning its own performance?
