CONGRATULATIONS to York City on the second victory at Wembley in one week and their promotion.
With the Community Stadium plan being approved in this same week, can I make another plea for common sense to prevail and for the city to seize this opportunity to create the nation’s first solar stadium here in York? It would be a fitting legacy of the Olympics and the football club’s success. It would show an administration committed to the future.
Forget climate change for a moment and think about energy, money and jobs. About £800 is spent on energy per person per year across Europe. In York this translates to roughly £160 million pounds of York money going mainly abroad to bring us the fuel to power and heat our lives. If we spend the money here the money stays in York, provides jobs and gives us energy security.
The solar stadium in Frieburg in Germany produces a quarter of a million kilowatt hours of electricity per year. The power station on the stadium roof is owned by the supporters, who each earn a dividend from their investment.
Let’s show the confidence to create a stadium that powers homes and the club, and allows supporters to invest in their future.
