I HAVE read with interest the letters about the day the bomb dropped on 32 Brownlow Street.

As a young child I lived at 30 Brownlow Street with my parents, Alec and Ivy, my grandad, my aunt Lill, sister Audrey and brother David. Mr Bond lived next door at 32, the corner shop.

The bomb dropped in January 1941. Although I cannot recall the exact date, I remember it well. It had been snowing heavily and we were all asleep. My dad was at home instead of working the night at York Minster. He woke and heard the plane circling overhead and rushed to get us out of bed and downstairs.

When the bomb dropped, we were all blown under the table. My mum and aunt were caught at the top of the stairs and my grandad was trapped under rubble in his bed. As I recall, Mr Bond next door was hit by a door and later died from his injuries. We never did return to our house and all our possessions were loaded into a cart and we were re-housed at 200 Kingsway North.

Reading all the letters in The Press has brought back a lot of memories.
