I HAVE just seen Taste The Waste, one of three films being screened at City Screen as part of the Green Film Festival.

These facts have raised my adrenalin levels; the images are burnt on my mind: 1. More than half our food lands in the bin. Each year Britain throws away 18 million tons of perfectly edible food.

2. 90 million tons of food are thrown away in the EU each year – twice the amount needed to feed all the hungry people in the world.

3. 40-50 per cent of vegetables grown by farmers don’t meet the exact specification of supermarkets. Luckily, we can buy this nutritious “waste” at farmers’ markets.

4. Bakeries bake up to 20 per cent excess bread which results in waste bread mountains. Three million tons of bread is thrown away in the EU each year. One German baker has found that by mixing his waste breadcrumbs with wood shavings he can fuel his ovens and recycle all his waste.

5. The food waste coming out of supermarkets is horrendous. “Dumpster Dining” is the new way to survive for many homeless and poverty-stricken people. However, Japan recycles food waste as animal feed.

Many think we could save the planet and ourselves by going vegan.
