A GOLFER is planning to play 90 holes in one day at a York course to raise money for charity.

Luke Smith, 31, of Muncastergate, York, estimates he will have to run and walk about 30 miles to complete five rounds on June 26 at Fulford Golf Club, where he is a member.

He said he would be starting virtually in the dark at 4am and was hoping to raise £1,500 for the charity Fusion, which helps Christian students starting at university find a church to attend. People wanting to sponsor him can go to uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Luke20Smith

Meanwhile, the final fundraising event for the chose charities of the current Lord Mayor of York, Coun David Horton. He hands over the chain of office on Thursday will take place tomorrow at Pike Hills Golf Club, near Copmanthorpe.

The event, set to raise more than £5,000 for York Mind and York Against Cancer, was originally due to take place on April 20, but had to be postponed because of heavy rain. This time the weather forecast is good and more than 50 teams will be taking part. The Lord Mayor and Sheriff are pictured wearing new embroidered golf shirts for the event, which were provided by Keal Teamwear, of Walmgate, York.
