A PUB landlord who was found hanging had some history of depression, an inquest was told.
Andrew Graham Wingfield, 39, who ran the Cottage Inn at Haxby, but formerly managed several city-centre restaurants, lived in Fulford and cycled to the pub at 8pm last Wednesday, said York Coroner Donald Coverdale in opening the inquest.
He said Mr Wingfield was last seen alive at 11.30pm by staff and he seemed his usual self.
He said at 8am on Thursday, a cleaner let herself into the pub and found him hanging in the function room. Paramedics attended and confirmed Mr Wingfield had died and a post-mortem examination gave a provisional cause of death as hanging.
The inquest was then adjourned to a date to be fixed, pending further inquiries.
