A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER celebrating her 100th birthday today said the secret to her long and happy life is “being cheerful, happy go-lucky and smiling”.
Kathleen Hick, of Lime Tree Avenue in New Earswick, is today marking her landmark birthday with friends and family.
Mrs Hick was born in York and attended Cherry Tree School off Nunnery Lane.
Her and her sisters Ada and Rene were brought up by their aunt Kitty after her mother Rachel died when she was seven.
Mrs Hick went on to work at Terry’s and later the Theatre Royal, where she worked as an usherette and her husband Clifford – to whom she was married for more than 50 years before he passed away – worked as a dresser.
The couple had a son, Malcolm, and they lived in what is now the Stonebow area before they became the first residents of the newly built Kingsway North, in Clifton. Mrs Hick went on to work at Rowntrees for many years.
