A SCOUT Group in York is undertaking a huge challenge to raise funds for desperately-needed repairs to its base, writes Grace Newton.

The 1st Heworth Group need at least £5,000 to replace the roof of its Scout Hut in Bad Bargain Lane after the building suffered several leaks.

Now four of the group’s leaders plan to cycle 1,000 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats in a bid to secure sponsorship.

The ride will see inexperienced cyclists Matthew Illman, brothers Adam and Dan Cisek and Will Coombs joined by members of the Scout movement from across the country as they tackle the epic distance.

“The leaders will stay overnight at Scout huts along the way, in places such as Oxfordshire, Durham and Galashiels in Scotland.

Assistant Scout leader Helen Green, 23, said: “Other Scouts will cycle part of the distance with them.

The four will have only 11 days to complete the challenge – and will pass through York on Thursday.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the support from the Scouting community and we’re delighted to have so many young Scouts getting on their bikes to join us in this nationwide effort. It will undoubtedly be a great boost to us when things get tough!” said 23-year-old Scout leader Matthew.

And younger members of the Group helped in the attempt to hit the fundraising target by cycling for 1,000 minutes combined on exercise bikes on Friday night, before waving their leaders goodbye as they hit the road the next morning.

The 16-hour relay in the hut saw youngsters aged 11-18 pedal through the night, ending with a barbecue and fun day when they reached their milestone.
