A DREAM bream haul enabled Mick Doyle to end the Acomb Tackle York Winter Angling League on a high.

The Leeds Angling Centre rodman won the sixth and final league match of the series with a 60lb catch comprising no fewer than 13 bream and one skimmer. He used worm and feeder from the bridgefield to top the 48-strong field.

Second place went to Tang Hall’s Dean Rollinson. His 37lb 9oz catch, also from the bridgefield, featured 13 bream and one skimmer.

Doyle’s team-mate Col Hardy was third, again from the bridgefield. Six bream, roach and perch made up his 19-05 total.

The next two positions were occupied by an Anglers World Hols duo.

Tony Stephenson totalled 19-05 after reeling in five bream and a skimmer, while the five bream bagged by Dean Smith yielded 18-12 to secure fifth place.

Over the six matches, Anglers World’s Stan Haigh was pipped to the individual honour by Hardy (Leeds Angling Centre).

Both teams also finished on the same points total with Leeds Angling Centre taking the verdict after having more section wins than their Anglers World rivals.

Double delight, meanwhile, fell to York angler Paul Kozyra in the latest match at Raker Lakes.

The York Joinery rod made it back-to-back wins on Horseshoe lake, topping a field of 17 with a huge haul of 108lb 7oz.

Kozyra’s catch from peg 27 included carp to 8lb caught on mainly 11mm bread punch with odd fish on corn feeding caster and sweet corn.

Kozyra said: “Having arrived at my peg, I noticed a couple of carp showing themselves just in front of a tree opposite, which is always a good sign.

“On the whistle, I lowered the the float rig in at 14 metres with bread punch on the hook and after 20 seconds found myself playing a carp of 6lb.

“This continued for the next 90 minutes until I had to stop to get a second net.

“On my return, I found the fish had disappeared and I only had another five fish for the remainder of the match.”

Second place went to Danny Scott, of Bob Co, Leeds, at peg 14 with a haul of 59lb 8oz. He caught mainly chub with double caster loose feeding casters.

York’s Jim Gladstone was third from peg 21 with 35lb 6oz.

The next three places went to Leeds trio Lee Varley, Trevor Scott and Oliver Hewitt.

There are no angling matches booked on York waters until Barleycorn Scholes Angling Club fish Laybourne Lakes on Sunday, April 8.
