THIEVES broke into a North Yorkshire quarry and stole diesel from three machines.

Officers were alerted after the lock was broken off a compound and £700 worth of diesel was siphoned out of the machines at Hensall Quarry sometime between Friday and Monday.

One of the machines targeted was an excavator and a total of 1,000 litres of fuel is believed to have been taken.

Sergeant Matt Foale, of Selby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “This is the latest of a few incidents of this nature recently. I am urging anyone who saw any suspicious activity or vehicles in the area of the quarry over the weekend to come forward.”

Sgt Foale also urged residents and business owners to be vigilant and take the necessary security measures to protect their fuel. At a time when fuel prices are peaking, it is important to protect your property from thieves.

“Ensure that gardens, compounds, sheds or outbuildings are well lit and if possible install CCTV. It is also a good idea to get alarms fitted.

“It is important that the police and the public work together to ensure that criminals don’t get an easy ride.”

Anyone who can help the investigation is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101.
