THERE have been many comments in the papers and on TV about Englebert Humperdinck being chosen to represent the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest this year, not all favourable.

I find it difficult to understand this. I wonder if any of the complainants have ever heard him sing. He has spent most of his singing career abroad, where he has been very successful; or is it just his age they find difficult to accept?

When you compare his melodious voice, vocal range and the feeling he puts into his singing with what passes for singing today, there is no comparison. Englebert sings, the so-called singers of today screech, yell and shout; you cannot understand a word they are trying to sing, there is no melody and their facial contortions frighten you to death.

Since we have not won the Eurovision Song Contest for years, it seems more discerning people obviously agree with me.

Give the man a chance, he cannot be any worse than our previous contributions to the Eurovision Song Contest and his detractors could be in for a pleasant surprise.

With luck we might see real singers and melodious story-telling songs emerging, instead of garbled rubbish.
