YOUTH was swept aside by Acomb Hockey Club men’s first XI for a 2-0 Yorkshire League division four win over a coltish Ben Rhydding IV outfit.

Starting the stronger, the Tangerines were kept at bay by the visiting ’keeper and sound defence in a scoreless first half.

Early in the second half a strike by Matt Gray broke the deadlock and with midfielders Matt Dickenson, Dan Pratt and Ryan Forster driving forward, it was no surprise when Forster doubled the lead.

Joint men of the match ’keeper Craig Brown and Dave Richardson, plus Dave Timmins, Simon Theaker and Pete Hilton, ensured a clean sheet.

Acomb men’s seconds only had a bare 11 men at City of York IX.

But the visitors prevailed to shade the derby by the odd goal in three for full division seven north points.

A mix-up in the Acomb defence allowed York to take a third-minute lead.

But galvanised, the Tangerines applied sustained pressure with Acomb youngster Luke Yates going close several times only to be thwarted by the York ’keeper.

John Armitage was solid as ever in the middle of the park for Acomb and linked well with a rampaging Tom Whitfield.

And after the break, Acomb’s pressure finally told with a brace of strikes.
