MOTORISTS are facing major rush-hour delays on a major commuter route into York when roadworks start next week.

City of York Council has revealed it is to carry out road resurfacing and reconstruction of the A1079 near Dunnington, starting on Monday.

“The work on the A1079 will be carried out under 24-hour temporary traffic signals for the whole period of the works to minimise disruption to traffic flows on the A1079,” said a spokeswoman.

She said the temporary traffic signals would be manually controlled to prevent traffic queues blocking back to the A64 Grimston Bar interchange.

“As the works are ongoing through morning and evening peak traffic flows, delays are expected and travellers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly.”

She said that to ensure works were carried out safely, York Road would be closed at its junction with the A1079 for the duration of the works.

The work would be carried out from next Monday until March 25, working from 7am to 11pm.

“Local traffic will follow a signed diversion via Common Lane to Dunnington village,” she said.

“Buses will be diverted for the duration of the works. The shared footway/cycleway will not be affected and access for pedestrians and cyclists will be available at all times.”

The contractor carrying out the work will be City of York Council Highways.

The work coincides with major roadworks in York city centre which has led to the closure of Clifford Street and Tower Street in one direction.

The works, running from the Coppergate junction to the access road to the Castle Museum, which started yesterday, will run for approximately two weeks, working from 7am to 11pm.

A 24-hour one-way lane closure is in force for the whole period of the works to prevent traffic entering the city from the Tower Street/Skeldergate Bridge end.

Meanwhile, two city streets used by office workers and rail employees will be closed for five days from today while workers carry out urgent sewer work.

Tanner Row and Toft Green is closed for much of its length to all vehicles, except emergency vehicles, until midnight on Saturday. Access for pedestrians will be maintained.
