In response to Phil Shepherdson (Letters, March 6), while I agree with what he says the main reason people are not using buses is that the fares are too high.
Last Friday, I helped out at Bus Users UK with their surgery in York and the high fares were the most common complaint closely followed by poor evening services and then reliability, especially on the Number 10 service.
If the council would like more people to use buses then I suggest that they use the grant they have applied for to lower fares and provide more evening services.
York does not shut down at 6.30pm. In the past too much has been spent on useless gimmicks like the FTR.
Ian Foster, Haxby.
