I am writing to thank you for your article, “Parachute jump fundraiser to help Scottish Greyhound Sanctuary” (March 3).

Congratulations to all at RSPCA York Animal Home in Landing Lane for participating in an innovative method of raising funds and awareness to benefit greyhounds and lurchers, and for their devoted work rescuing and transitioning the hounds to well-deserved new lives in loving homes.

The public has become increasingly aware of the cruelty inherent in the greyhound racing industry.

We cannot fathom our dogs enduring abysmal confinement day in and day out, or causing them to risk injury and death running around an oval just so people can bet on them.

We do not consider our dogs as investments to be valued only as long as they are generating a profit. Nor can we imagine not caring for our dogs if they become injured or as they age. That is no way to treat a dog.

I have personally adopted beloved ex-racing greyhounds since 1997, and I am a board member of GREY2K USA, a national non-profit organisation that works to end the cruelty of greyhound racing.
